LA ÓPERA RIESGOSA

Debido a su apasionada trama político - amorosa, al temperamento de los tres protagonistas y a las balas de fogueo y el suicidio de Tosca tirandose desde Castel Sant' Angelo en el tercer acto, Tosca es una de las óperas más riesgosas del repertorio operístico. También una de las más amadas por el público, al igual que " Madame Butterfly ", " Trovatore ", " La Traviata ", " La Bohème ", " Aïda ", " Carmen " o " Norma ".

Siempre hay algún problemita y esta versión del año 2000 con Rita Contino, Darío Volonté y yo no fue la excepción. En la producción de Beni Montresor el suelo era muy patinoso, hecho de un extraña mezcla de plástico y acrílico. Para colmo los escalones del segundo acto eran muchos y muy estrechos y altos, así que tuve que hacer malabarismos para no patinarme y caer todo ese trayecto hacia abajo. Me pregunto porqué los " regisseurs " y escenógrafos a veces nos hacen las cosas tan difíciles a los cantantes.

El " terceto Contino, Volonté y Ortale " funcionó muy bien. Y esta vez no hubo tenores heridos por esquirlas de las balas de fogueo, como pasó con Fabio Armiliato en Verona o Renato Francesconi en el Teatro Colón ( Gilda Cruz Romo aullaba ante un ' cadáver faltante ' que era el de su Cavaradossi que había huido del escenario arrastrandose, con el fin de ser atendido por un enfermero o médico )

" Tosca " has an interesting political and love story and there are many temperaments, dangerous situations and even a suicide ( Tosca jumping from a high tower in Castel Sant ' Angelo in Rome ) and a fake execution ( with fake bullets ). There have been many funny situations as well, as for instance Dame Eva Turner bouncing up from a mattress put by the stagehands to make her fall safely. The mattress was too tight and apt for big jumps and the diva " re appeared " after her big jump !

Our performance had just a bit of that because it was funny to see me do my utmost to avoid slipping in the slippery surface put to cover the steep staircase in Scarpia's room.

I never understand why so many stage directors of the last years are reluctant to produce safe stage situations for their singers. We have already a risky profession in that we must sing for thousands of persons, in pitch and rythm, remember the texts, follow the batons, act as well as we can, etc, etc...so why make things worse with unnecesary dangers ?

That floor, that slippery plastic or acrilic floor ! However, the team made by Rita Contino, Darío Volonté and me was very successful.
